“What is titanium?” Titanium Encyclopedia

  • '11/01/10 /

Titanium is the most attention-grabbing metal today.

Compared with other metals, its history in relation to human use is very short.
In 1791, William Gregor, a British clergyman, discovered black sand (ore), which was different from iron. He named the element manaccanite.

Four years later in 1795, German chemist Martin Klaproth found the same element in mineral rutile.

Klaproth named it titanium after the Titans, brave giants in Greek mythology. Humankind thus encountered titanium for the first time.
Titanium was studied and studied, and was used for the first time in 1948. Having a short history of only sixty years after discovery, titanium has a limitless potential.
FUTA・Q is a leading manufacturer that pursues the material of the future.

What metal is titanium similar to?

The three advantages of titanium are being light, strong, and excellent in corrosion resistance.

---Light!
Its specific gravity is 4.51, which is between those of iron and aluminum. It is one third the gravity of iron and two thirds that of copper.

---Strong!
Titanium is about six times as strong as aluminum and about twice as strong as iron when the weight is the same.

---Excellent corrosion resistance!
In seawater, titanium is comparable to platinum, and superior to other major metals in corrosion resistance.

Titanium also has the following advantages:

! High melting point
! Low heat expansion coefficient
! Low heat conductivity
! High electrical resistance
! Low Young's modulus

In addition, titanium is almost 100% recyclable. Because it does not deteriorate for a long period, its recycling rate is almost 100%.
Titanium can minimize the life cycle cost and does not contaminate the environment. It is truly friendly to the Earth.

FUTA・Q titamium

For these advantages including excellent corrosion resistance, strength, and light weight, titanium has been used in various industrial fields such as aerospace components and chemical plants.
Today, for its non-toxic characteristic and biocompatibility, titanium is expected to be applied to medical and welfare fields.
FUTA・Q proposes the development of new products, using the composite technology enabled by our original fine-machining technology and the latest facilities.
We transform possibilities into reality. Why don't you join us to create products that will change the future?

From Kyoto to the World The brand-new Beta-titanium Tube is light, strong, and flexible like a bamboo!

  • '11/01/10 /

Futaku Precision's original technology invented the worlds' first beta-titanium tube.
Beta-titanium tubes are flexible like bamboos and are, like shape memory alloy (Ni-Ti), not easily permanently bent (even if is bent once, the shape is restored).
Flexible, light and strong beta-titanium tubes are available from Futaku Precision, the manufacturer.

Superior in bending rigidity, light, and strong, like shape-memory alloy

Beta titanium features light weight and high corrosion resistance, both of which are characteristics of titanium. This non-magnetic material also features superior tensile strength and excellent spring property (low Young's modulus).
Futaku also supplies products made from highly biocompatible Gummetal, and 15-3-3-3 titanium (which is approved for medical use as orthodontic wires)

Corrosion resistance
Superior to stainless steel and steel alloys in most environments. Equivalent to platinum in seawater.

Specific gravity
4.8 (light; about 50% of iron and 60% of stainless steel)

Mechanical characteristics:
Tensile strength: Approx. 750 MPa-2000 MPa(The characteristics vary depending on the material.)
Young's modulus: About 100 GPa-45 GPa
Surface hardness: About 400 HV (after agingprocessing)
*Nickel-free materials and biocompatible materials are available.
--Futaku's β-titanium pipe production records (Gummetal,Bio Soft Titanium, DAT 51, and Ti 15-3-3-3)

-- Products available in the sizes of outside diameter, 0.5 mm; bore diameter, 0.3 mm; and wall thickness, 0.1 mm or larger.
*Titanium materials in general are difficult to machine; however, Futaku processes titanium using various methods, including micro boring as well as laser welding, bore grinding and swaging.

Advantages of Futaku Precision beta-titanium tubes

Various pure titanium tubes are commercialized. Futaku Precision currently produces beta-titanium tubes made from titanium alloy (beta-titanium alloy) of the minimal dimensions of 0.5 mm in outside diameter, 0.3 mm in bore diameter, and 0.1 in wall thickness.

We produce beta-titanium tubes to order. The minimum length is one meter, and the shortest lead time is three weeks.*1
If you need beta-titanium tubes of other sizes, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We can also polish the bore of beta-titanium tubes.
*1 Lead time may be longer depending on the size.
